Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani presided over a meeting today, Monday, to address the problem of outdated brick factories and their effect on urban areas; the Deputy Director of the Prime Minister’s Office, the Minister of Industry, and other advisers accompanied him.
“The steps to move the old brick factories from the city of Nahrawan, due of their location near residential cities, their environmental impacts, their use of old machinery that is not compatible with the development and urban renaissance that the country is witnessing, in addition to their exploitation of children and women in work, and the lack of work permits for many of them, and the pollution they cause,” the conference attendees said.
Al-Sudani thus instructed the Ministry of Industry to conduct a geological assessment in order to choose alternative sites that satisfy environmental demands, have fundamental raw material requirements, and have a road system for transportation. These sites ought to be outside the new cities under development and far from residential areas. They should also stress to producers the application of contemporary technologies considering the surroundings in different places.
Furthermore, he directed the Ministry of Industry to create a framework for all governorates’ acceptable alternative areas’ availability in line with the confirmed parameters for the building of brick factories. The next meeting of the Higher Committee for Coordination among the Governorates will cover this system.
