On Saturday, two Iranian officers reported that over 272,000 visitors from Iran entered Iraqi territory through two border crossings to take part in the Arbaeen pilgrimage in Karbala.
Nader Ameed Zadeh, the governor of Khorramshahr city in Khuzestan Province, said over 200,000 individuals entered Iraq via the Shalamcheh International Border Crossing for the Arbaeen ceremonies since the beginning of Safar month. Pilgrims’ crossing runs smoothly.
Only foreign nationals residing in Iran can cross to Iraq to visit the holy shrines, he noted.
Since the beginning of Safar, approximately 72,000 visitors from both Iran and other countries have crossed the “Jazib” border, according to Mohammad Khanji, the assistant coordinator for reconstruction affairs in Khuzestan.
Khanji described the traffic at the border as “fluid and straightforward”. He expected more visitors as the Arbaeen ceremony approaches, with 71,634 as of the previous Friday.
Khanji mentioned that the caravans providing services to visitors at the “Jazib” border operate 24/7.
