IMTIDAD Movement opts out of Iraqi provincial elections amid leadership transition

The Imtidad Movement has recently announced that they will not take part in the upcoming provincial and district council elections. In an official statement, they explained that their inaugural general conference, where new leaders are supposed to be elected, has been postponed. Additionally, the National Coalition, led by Iyad Allawi, also refused to participate in the provincial council elections, calling them “redundant entities fostering corruption.” Prime Minister Muhammad S. al-Sudani previously declared that the provincial and district council elections would take place on December 18, 2023, which provoked varied reactions from different political groups.
