The Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, announced on Thursday from the holy Karbala Province that the largest project for the generation of 10,000 megawatts of electricity was on the verge of kick-off.
“The stability of the sources of energy encourages investment and development, pushes for the development of sources of income, and activates all other economic sectors,” Al-Sudani said in a statement, “the project will be implemented according to a new economic model and a new vision that will be announced to the private sector after it has been studied by a team of consultants specialising in electricity.” He further said, “The project would be carried out pursuant to a new economic
“The combined cycle projects and solar energy projects form part of the plans of the government to shift to an electric grid and to start the solar energy project in Karbala and Babylon, then continue with the rest of the governorates,” he added.
He underlined, “The three station projects will achieve an increase in production of electrical energy, and the combined cycle of the Karbala gas station will contribute to add 132 megawatts to the station already running with a total design capacity of 250.”.
He also cited the investment project for the Karbala Solar Power Plant as another important contract entered into by the government in the area of renewable energy projects with several specialized international companies. Another critical agreement is building a 300 megawatt solar power facility under private sector ownership.
Under a contract with the German company Siemens, he highlighted, “the Karbala Banks Secondary Station, 400 KV, with a capacity of 1500 megawatts is being implemented within the second phase of electrical energy transmission projects.” The first transformer station of its kind in Karbala, this would help relieve network congestion and hence improve stability to meet the needs of many different sectors in the Middle Euphrates area.
