Nechirvan Barzani calls on the Iraqi president to address the “problem of the Sako decree” as soon as possible

On Tuesday, Nechirvan Barzani, the President of Kurdistan Region, welcomed Cardinal Louis Sako, the leader of the Chaldean Church in Iraq and across the globe, along with his delegation.

The Presidency of the Region released a statement to the Shafaq News Agency. The meeting discussed the removal of the Republican Decree of the Chaldean Church. Nechirvan Barzani emphasized the importance of Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region, being inclusive of all religious and national components. He urged President Abdul Latif Rashid to address this issue promptly. 

Barzani emphasized the importance of coexisting and accepting others as a fundamental belief and principle. He highlighted that Iraq’s beauty is in being a homeland for all its diverse components, where everyone’s rights are protected.

In the statement, the Cardinal expressed gratitude towards Nechirvan Barzani, the President of the Region, for his support. He emphasized that the Kurdistan Region represents coexistence and acceptance of diversity, and they take pride in it.

He noted that this issue won’t impede his work and responsibilities. He vows to uphold Iraq’s components and promote coexistence.

During the meeting, the Minister of Endowments and Religious Affairs of the Kurdistan Regional Government addressed various issues related to the status of churches and Christians in the Nineveh Plain and beyond.
