On Monday, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Al-Sudani emphasized the importance of working together with the United Kingdom. He stressed the need for collaborative efforts to combat smuggling, human trafficking, drug trade, and aid in the return of funds and individuals sought by the judiciary. The Prime Minister expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming signing of the joint memorandum of intent between the interior ministries of both countries.

Earlier today, the media office of the Prime Minister announced that Al-Sudani hosted Tom Togendhat, the British Minister of State for Security, and his delegation. The meeting was friendly and diplomatic, and focused on discussions about the bilateral relationship between the two countries. They talked about ways to increase cooperation, particularly in areas such as security, defense, counter-terrorism, and fighting corruption.

The Prime Minister of Iraq, Al-Sudani, appreciated the United Kingdom’s support and their shared commitment to eliminate ISIS. He highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts to prevent criminal activities across the border. Specifically, he stressed the need for joint action against smuggling, human trafficking, drug trade, and the circulation of psychotropic substances. Additionally, he emphasized that eradicating corruption is a fundamental demand rooted in society that poses a threat to global stability beyond Iraq’s borders, according to the statement.

According to Al-Sudani’s statement, the Prime Minister emphasized that his government has created a national plan to fight human trafficking in Iraq from 2023 to 2026. Furthermore, they have developed a national strategy to address drug and psychotropic substance abuse from 2023 to 2025, demonstrating Iraq’s unwavering dedication to tackling these pressing issues. The statement also acknowledged the considerable strides that Iraq has made in these areas.

In addition, Al-Sudani expressed great enthusiasm for the upcoming signing of a joint memorandum of intent between the Iraqi and British interior ministries. The initial version of the memorandum of understanding between the two countries was also warmly received.

Minister Tom Togendhat stated that the United Kingdom is prepared to provide advanced technologies to enhance the capabilities of Iraqi security forces. He praised the Iraqi security apparatus for their bravery in battling terrorism and suppressing the influence of ISIS, highlighting their crucial contribution to maintaining the country’s security and stability.
