Yesterday, Ali Jaber Al-Tamimi, a legal expert, outlined the various penalties that ambassadors in Iraq could face if they break the law. He also highlighted the organizations responsible for carrying out the disciplinary measures.
According to Al-Tamimi, in a statement to Al-Maalouma, the Foreign Service Law No. 45 of 2008 grants the authority to hold ambassadors accountable for actions that could harm the reputation of their country.
“If the ambassador’s actions have an impact on the country’s reputation or violate its laws, an investigative committee will be formed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs. This committee will be led by the deputy minister, the director of the legal department, and one of the ambassadors, in accordance with Articles 38 and 39 of the aforementioned law. If the committee finds any criminal activity, it will refer the file to the court for further action.”
He stated that, according to the committee’s report, the foreign minister can suggest that the prime minister replace or dismiss the ambassador. This can be done through cabinet and parliamentary voting, as outlined in Articles 80 and 81 of the Iraqi constitution.
